SCL Seminar by Mihailo Cubrovic

SCL seminar of the Center for the Study of Complex Systems, will be held on Friday, 2 December 2016 at 14:00 in the library reading room “Dr. Dragan Popović" of the Institute of Physics Belgrade. The talk entitled

"Thermalization, heavy fermions, unconventional order parameters and AdS/CFT correspondence"

will be given by Dr. Mihailo Čubrović.

Abstract of the talk:

In this talk we will consider equilibration and thermalization in weakly and strongly correlated systems following a thermal quench, i.e., connecting a previously isolated system to a heath bath. At least three different regimes of thermalization will be identified, with different scaling properties. The weakly coupled case can be understood through the thermofield dynamics formalism, where thermalization becomes a symmetry-breaking transition and can be described as the Higgsing of a non-compact emergent gauge field. The strongly coupled case can be studied through gauge/gravity duality (AdS/CFT correspondence), where one can calculate the correlation functions non-perturbatively by solving the equations of motion of the dual system in curved spacetime. If time permits, we will also discuss quantum criticality in heavy fermion systems as another example of a critical phenomenon without a conventional order parameter, which can again be understood as a transition (of deconfinement type) of an emergent gauge field.
