SCL Lecture series on complexity - Part 1

You are cordially invited to the first lecture in SCL Lecture series on complexity which will be held on Monday, 14 October 2024 at 18:00 in the small lecture hall of the Kolarac Endowment. The talk entitled

The physics of complexity and the hidden forces in our social lives

will be given by Dr. Marija Mitrović Dankulov (Institute of Physics Belgrade). The abstract of the talk:

Humans are complex systems. Their cells, tissues, and organs are complex systems. The society we live in is a complex system. The physics of complex systems combines the methods of physics, artificial intelligence, biology, sociology, and other sciences to understand the structure and dynamics of these systems and their mutual connection. It answers the questions of how epidemics occur and how information spreads. Because of physics, we now understand how and why one emotional message can cause an avalanche of emotions on social networks and why we trust strangers in online social communities more than our neighbors. The 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded for the contribution of physics to our understanding of how and under what conditions neurons in our brains and artificial neural networks can exhibit collective computational abilities. In this lecture, we will present the most significant results of the physics of complexity and demonstrate its ability to uncover the forces that govern our social and technological lives.
