CERN delegation visits SCL
On June 8, 2010 Institute of Physics Belgrade, hosted a visit from a delegation of representatives of the Council's (Fact Finding Task Force), CERN's highest body, which was in a three-day visit to Serbia. This group is made up of representatives of different Member States in the CERN Council in order to examine the validity of the application five states that have applied for candidacy for full membership in this largest scientific institution Europe.
The focus of the visit to IPB was mainly related to the consideration of possible Serbian membership in CERN and the benefits that Serbia could have from that membership. Director of the Institute of physics Belgrade, Prof. Dr. Dragan Popovic gave introductory talk about structure of the IPB and generally about its R&D projects. Members of different groups from the Institute briefly presented their research in the following order: Dr. Iris Borjanovic from the ATLAS group, Dr. Milutin Blagojevic from Gravitational, Particle and Field group, Dr. Antun Balaz from SCL, and Prof. Dr. Ivan Anicin from Low-level Background Laboratory.
Basic requirements for application for membership of the state at this leading scientific organization are:
1) that there exist well-organized groups of researchers that may successfully participate in the scientific and technological projects at CERN
2) that ther exist industrial firms that could participate in tenders with other European firms for specific jobs within ongoing scientific and technological projects at CERN
3) economic and political stability of the state
Working Group shall prepare a report on the basis of which the Council of CERN on its next meeting in December 2010. will decide on the candidacy. In the case of a positive report, the outcome of voting in the Council of CERN, Serbia could become a candidate for membership of CERN, most probably in January 2011.
