SCL Online Seminar by Marija Mitrović Dankulov

You are cordially invited to the SCL online seminar of the Center for the Study of Complex Systems, which will be held on Thursday, 16 March 2023 at 14:00 on Zoom. The talk entitled

Structure and dynamics of socio-economic systems

will be given by Dr. Marija Mitrović Dankulov (SCL, Institute of Physics Belgrade). Abstract of the talk:

Socio-economic systems are a broad class of complex systems that includes social, economic, education, scientific, technological, and ecological systems. While they differ in type and function, a common property of all of them is that they consist of a large number of interacting units with people at their core. This fact and the abundance of data about socio-economic systems has led to the development of a subfield of statistical physics, sociophysics, that studies the structure and dynamics of these systems. Sociophysics combines tools, methods, and paradigms from statistical physics and complex networks theory to uncover the mechanisms underlying the evolution of constantly changing socio-economic systems, the emergence of collective behavior, and the connection between their structure and dynamics.

In this talk, we will present our contribution to the development of this field [1-7]. Models of complex networks are an essential tool for understanding the mechanisms that drive the evolution and dynamics of complex systems. We will examine how different elements [2] and properties of growth signals influence the structural properties of evolving complex networks. We will use empirical analysis and theoretical modeling to study the emergence of different types of collective phenomena in knowledge-based communities [3, 4] and to understand the emergence of universal patterns in growth of social groups [5]. We will show how mapping time series data onto complex networks can be used for studying the structural changes that occur due to crises in complex systems [6-7].
