Belgrade 2020 - science as integral part of culture
Representatives of the Belgrade 2020 project visited SCL. Belgrade 2020 seeks to put up the candidacy for Belgrade as European Capital of Culture in 2020. The visitors included Mr. Peca Popovic and Ms. Masa Samardziski who discussed the main ideas behind Belgrade 2020. In particular, they focused on the Beograd je sistem initiative that plans to build a scale model of the Solar system the size of Belgrade. Mr. Popovic stressed that culture must certainly encompass science, and that a massive popularization of science initiative like SCL's would fit perfectly into the wider plans that will be undertaken under the auspices of Belgrade 2020.
Prof. Aleksandar Bogojevic, coordinator of Beograd je sistem, welcomed the guests to SCL and gave a brief presentation of the research effort undertaken at the laboratory as well as of its HPC resources. Prof. Bogojevic also outlined plans to build in the near future the National Supercomputing and Data Storage Facility housing the new Blue Danube supercomputer, emphasizing in particular how this cutting-edge tool will benefit not only science and technology in Serbia but a broader area of human creativity, i.e culture in the wider sense.
The brunt of the meeting was spent discussing practical steps that need to be taken in order to realize the goals of Beograd je sistem and to successfully integrate it into the ambitious ten year time scale of Beograd je 2020.
