SCL Online Seminar by Darja Cvetković

You are cordially invited to the SCL online seminar of the Center for the Study of Complex Systems, which will be held on Thursday, 19 November 2020 at 14:00 on Zoom. The talk entitled

Statistical physics of epidemics: models on complex networks

will be given by Darja Cvetković (Scientific Computing Laboratory, Center for the Study of Complex Systems, Institute of Physics Belgrade). Abstract of the talk:

Epidemic models lie at the core of our understanding of the spreading of infectious diseases in society. Complex and heterogeneous connectivity patterns characterize a society. The structural properties of complex real-world networks influence the dynamics of real systems, including epidemic spreading. In this talk, we will discuss some of the fundamental compartmental epidemic spreading models and their mean-field solutions. We will show the results of Susceptible-Infectious-Recovered (SIR) and Susceptible-Exposed-Infectious-Recovered (SEIR) models on a real network of social contacts and explore how the structure of the network influences the epidemic spreading. We will also explore how prevention measures, such as social distancing, affect the spreading of diseases. Finally, we will examine how mobility between municipalities influences the spreading of COVID-19 in Serbia. Our results show that intense mobility between some cities leads to a faster spread of the disease.
