SCL Online Seminar by David Vegh

You are cordially invited to the SCL online seminar of the Center for the Study of Complex Systems, which will be held on Thursday, 13 May 2021 at 14:00 on Zoom. The talk entitled

Segmented strings

will be given by Dr. David Vegh (Centre for Research in String Theory, School of Physics and Astronomy, Queen Mary University of London, UK). Abstract of the talk:

The motion of strings in three-dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime is governed by the integrable (generalized) sinh-Gordon equation. In this talk we will present an exact discretization of this equation. The corresponding embeddings are segmented strings, i.e., piecewise linear string solutions. This formalism allows for a simple derivation of the Schwarzian action for near-AdS_2 embeddings and is ideally suited for numerical calculations. We will present an example with rich dynamics: a perturbed string hanging from the boundary. If time allows, we will also discuss a class of segmented brane solutions.
